"Grovely! Grovely! and All Grovely!"proclaim the inhabitants of Wishford

" Grovely! Grovely! and All Grovely!" proclaim the inhabitants of Wishford, Wiltshire during the Oak Apple Day procession from the village to Salisbury Cathedral. The custom, part of the celebrations held each year on May 29, commenorates an oldestablished right of the villagers to collect firewood from the neighbouring forest of Grovely. At one time the villagers danced from wishford to the Cathedral. Now, the six-mile journey is made by coach. Outside the Cathedral a Traditional dance is performed. After the dance the villagers process up the aisle to the High Altar where they are seen here holding oak boughs as they proclaim, " Grovely! Grovely! and All Grovely!" June 1959 P005051

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a cherished tradition in the quaint village of Wishford, Wiltshire. The image showcases the Oak Apple Day procession that takes place every year on May 29th, as villagers make their way from Wishford to Salisbury Cathedral. The procession is steeped in history and commemorates an ancient right held by the villagers - the collection of firewood from the neighboring forest of Grovely. In times gone by, the journey was accompanied by lively dances all along the route. However, modern times have seen this six-mile trek replaced with a more convenient coach ride. As depicted in this snapshot, outside Salisbury Cathedral, a traditional dance unfolds before the awe-inspiring structure. Villagers can be seen holding oak boughs high above their heads while proclaiming "Grovely! Grovely! and All Grovely!". This heartfelt declaration echoes through time, symbolizing both gratitude for their rights and reverence for nature's abundance. Taken in June 1959 by Mirrorpix photographers, this photograph encapsulates not only local customs but also offers us a glimpse into life during that era. It serves as a reminder of how traditions bind communities together and preserve cultural heritage throughout generations.
