Alveston House in Alveston village near Stratford. It was sold in 1810 for £39

Alveston House in Alveston village near Stratford. It was sold in 1810 for £ 39, 500 which ended a family connection with peaceful Alveston which had lasted since 16th century days. It has been described by a very great expert as " a singularly perfect example of the Wren type of country house." Beautiful brickwork with dark blue headers and neat angle-dressings of stone, surrounds tall sash windows whose thin, elegant glazing bars replace sturdier ones or possibly mulions and transforms. There are the expected dormers in the high-pitched roof which displays the typical white - painted modillion cornice. The original entrance-front has gently-protecting wings: its central doorway retains a bracketed porch, but has been superseded by a columned, classic affair of mid-18th century date, elsewhere. The drive ends in a carriage-sweep before the " new" door from which one gazes down a lovely lime avenue supposed to be haunted and at the far end of which is all that remains of Alvestons old Norman church. It is believed to have been built by Thomas Peers, who married Elizabeth Newsham, of Chadshunt, Warwickshire. Inside the house, a simple, good Georgian staircase has taken the place of the sort that would have been commissioned by Thomas Peers. The views from the different rooms are charming, with lawn and River Avon, clipped yew hedges and stately trees near at hand, and further away the tower of Hampton Lucy Church, the Welcombe munument on its hill, and Sir Richard Hamiltons woods at Walton.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Alveston House: A Timeless Beauty with a Rich History". This print captures the enchanting Alveston House, nestled in the picturesque village of Alveston near Stratford. Steeped in history, this magnificent house was sold in 1810 for £39,500, severing a family connection that had endured since the 16th century. Renowned as a "singularly perfect example of the Wren type of country house". Alveston House boasts stunning brickwork adorned with dark blue headers and elegant stone angle-dressings. Its tall sash windows feature delicate glazing bars that replace their sturdier counterparts, exuding an air of grace and sophistication. The high-pitched roof showcases a classic white-painted modillion cornice and charming dormers. The original entrance-front is flanked by protective wings while retaining its bracketed porch. However, it has been surpassed by a columned mid-18th century doorway elsewhere on the property. As one approaches through the drive's carriage-sweep to reach the "new" door, they are greeted by breathtaking views down a hauntingly beautiful lime avenue. At its far end stands what remains of Alvestons old Norman church—a testament to centuries gone by. Inside this remarkable abode lies a simple yet elegant Georgian staircase that replaced an earlier commission from Thomas Peers—the man believed to have built this architectural gem. Each room offers delightful vistas featuring manicured lawns, the tranquil River Avon, majestic yew hedges, and towering trees nearby. In the distance lie Hampton Lucy Church's tower, Sir Richard Hamiltons woods at Walton and Welcombe monument atop its hill—creating an idyllic panorama. This evocative print from Mirrorpix transports us back to March 27th, 1966—an opportunity to cherish both past glory and timeless beauty.
