Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers camped in a hanger in Nairobi clean their weapons
Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers camped in a hanger in Nairobi clean their weapons (9mm Sten Submachine Gun and SMLE.303 Lee Enfield Mk.4 rifle) in Kenya during the Mau-Mau crisis 1952
October 1952.
British troops were sent to Kenya on the 19th of October 1952 to help deal with the growing Mau Mau uprising. Mau Mau members were travelling around openly throughout the day using pangas (blades) and firearms to attack their victims. Once the British army arrived the Mau Mau were forced out of the towns and into more wooded areas in the hills around Nairobi. Thsi didn t resolve the problem however. The attacks continued and even regular sweeps through the forests with Kenyan trackers failed to dislodge the Mau Mau. In the end despite the rounding up of thousands of suspects it was decided that the only solution was to offer an amnesty to theMau Mau, a move that incensed the white land owners.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment during the Mau-Mau crisis in Kenya, October 1952. In the image, brave men of the Lancashire Fusiliers are seen diligently cleaning their weapons inside a hangar in Nairobi. With focused expressions on their faces, they handle their 9mm Sten Submachine Guns and SMLE . 303 Lee Enfield Mk. 4 rifles with precision and care. During this tumultuous time, British troops were deployed to Kenya to combat the escalating Mau Mau uprising. The Mau Mau members posed a grave threat as they roamed freely during daylight hours, armed with blades and firearms which they used to attack innocent victims. As soon as the British army arrived, however, they forced the Mau Mau out of urban areas into wooded regions surrounding Nairobi. Despite these efforts, attacks persisted even after exhaustive searches through forests led by Kenyan trackers failed to dislodge the elusive rebels. Eventually, it was decided that an amnesty offer would be extended to theMau Mau members as a last resort solution—a decision that angered white landowners who sought more decisive action. This historic photograph from Memory Lane Prints serves as a poignant reminder of both the bravery exhibited by soldiers facing adversity and the complex challenges faced during this turbulent chapter in Kenyan history.
