EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the golden age of aviation in the 1930s. The image showcases a remarkable aircraft, the 1932 De Havilland D. H. 84 Dragon, which was specifically designed as a twin-engine alternative to the Fox Moth. This particular model, fitted with two powerful 130hp D. H Gipsy Major engines, was commissioned by Hillman Airways for their Paris service. With its sleek design and seating capacity for six passengers, this biplane quickly became a favorite among airlines during that era. A total of 115 Dragons were manufactured in Britain while an additional 87 were built in Australia. These planes played a vital role in revolutionizing air travel throughout the decade. The photograph captures one such Dragon on a survey flight over the breathtaking Shetland Islands in June 1933. Against the backdrop of Sumbergh Head Lighthouse, this aerial marvel soars through clear skies with grace and elegance. Although time has taken its toll on many vintage aircraft from this period, it is heartening to know that some survivors still exist today. This print serves as both a nostalgic reminder of aviation's past and a testament to human ingenuity and progress.
