Bargain hunters descended on a Leamington charity shop in 1966 to raise a small furtune
Bargain hunters descended on a Leamington charity shop in 1966 to raise a small furtune for local youth clubs. The Bargain Box in Bath Street sold clothes, toys and books donated to Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs by well-wishers. Shoppers queued outside the shop before it opened and the first 6 hours saw £ 230 go through the tills. The shop was opened for a week and eventually went on to make around £ 1, 400 for the organisation which was expanding at the time to take on more full-time officers.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1966, we witness the incredible enthusiasm of bargain hunters as they descend upon a Leamington charity shop. The purpose behind their fervor? To raise a small fortune for local youth clubs. Known as the Bargain Box, this quaint establishment on Bath Street offered an array of donated clothes, toys, and books courtesy of generous well-wishers associated with the Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs. Even before its doors swung open, eager shoppers formed long queues outside the shop in anticipation. As soon as it welcomed its first customers, an impressive £230 flowed through the tills within just six hours. This remarkable success prompted the decision to keep the shop open for an entire week. The dedication and support shown by these enthusiastic shoppers did not go unnoticed. By week's end, their collective efforts had generated approximately £1,400 for the expanding organization that was actively hiring more full-time officers at that time. This snapshot frozen in time encapsulates not only a momentous fundraising event but also showcases a vibrant display of clothing and bric-a-brac that attracted countless visitors seeking bargains from all walks of life during those nostalgic 1960s days in Leamington. Relive this era filled with youthful energy and community spirit through this evocative photograph captured by Mirrorpix on October 10th, 1966 - forever commemorating a chapter where shopping became synonymous with supporting local causes and fostering camaraderie among neighbors.
