EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to February 1970, where the Sunday Mirror Rally Team embarked on an extraordinary adventure. Captured at a breathtaking altitude of 25,000 feet, this image showcases the team's visit to the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine at Farnborough. In their quest to push boundaries and test their limits, the rally team found themselves inside the Institute's decompression chamber. This state-of-the-art facility allowed them to experience conditions similar to those they would encounter during their upcoming rally. At its highest point, they would need to drive at a staggering altitude of 16,000 feet. The photograph captures Peter Jopp in a moment of concentration as he attempts to balance a ruler on his extended fingers. Surrounding him are Squadron Leader Gordon Sharp, Mark Kahn, and Willy Cave – all members of this fearless team. With face masks securely fastened and aware of the importance of air safety in such extreme circumstances, these individuals were not just ordinary drivers but daring adventurers seeking new heights both literally and metaphorically. Bill Rowntree skillfully immortalizes this remarkable chapter in history through his lens. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but marvel at the courage displayed by these pioneers who dared defy gravity for the sake of pushing human capabilities further than ever before.
