The village of Villers aux Venta destroyed by the Germans during the fighting
The village of Villers aux Venta destroyed by the Germans during the fighting on the Eastern flank of the first Battle of the Marne which halted the German advance on Paris. After the village was liberated an elaborate series of excavation were discovered behind a house which the German Crown Prince is alledged to have occupied. These excavations were covered with boards and turf, and were constructed to allow the Kaisers son and his staff to escape in times of danger. This picture shows French soldiers at the entrance to the burrow also seen is the chair taken from the church which the Prince is supposed to have used. Circa 12th September 1914
