A nurse who was a dancer shows the children an exercise at the Thames Side war nursery
A nurse who was a dancer shows the children an exercise at the Thames Side war nursery. This is the biggest nursery of its kind in London. Over 100 children, from three months to five years, are brought daily by working mothers.
They have a jolly time from 7am to 7pm with tea, dance, demonstrations, exercise, amusement and sleep all the afternoon. Most of the children have fathers away serving in the services.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to June 1943, amidst the chaos of World War II on the Home Front. The image depicts a nurse who was once a dancer, gracefully demonstrating an exercise to a group of children at the Thames Side war nursery in London. This nursery holds the distinction of being the largest of its kind in the city, catering to over 100 children aged three months to five years. As working mothers bring their little ones here daily from 7am to 7pm, these youngsters find solace and joy within its walls. Tea parties, dance sessions, demonstrations, exercises - all contribute to creating a jolly atmosphere for these resilient young souls. Amidst amusement and playtime galore, they also enjoy much-needed afternoon naps. It is worth noting that most of these children have fathers serving far away in various branches of the armed forces. In this nurturing environment provided by dedicated nurses like our graceful dancer-turned-caregiver captured in this photograph, these children find comfort and support during such trying times. This snapshot not only encapsulates life during wartime but also highlights the importance placed on child care and keeping fit even under challenging circumstances. It serves as a poignant reminder of how communities come together during times of crisis to ensure that every child receives love and care regardless of their parents' absence or other hardships faced due to war's impact on society.
