The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension bridge, unlike the cantilever rail bridge
The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension bridge, unlike the cantilever rail bridge. Several proposals were rejected before the Mott Hay and Anderson design was chosen. It was the first long-span suspension bridge in the UK. Others have of course followed - the Severn Bridge, and the Humber Bridge. The Forth Road Bridge contains 39, 000 tons of steel, the towers stand 494 feet above the concrete foundations and it took a workforce of 300 just three and a half years to complete.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Forth Road Bridge in all its grandeur. Standing proudly against the picturesque Scottish landscape, this suspension bridge is a true marvel of engineering. Unlike its cantilever rail counterpart, the Forth Road Bridge was meticulously designed by Mott Hay and Anderson after several rejected proposals. As the first long-span suspension bridge in the UK, it paved the way for other remarkable structures like the Severn Bridge and Humber Bridge. The sheer scale of this architectural masterpiece is awe-inspiring – boasting an impressive 39,000 tons of steel and towering towers that stand at a staggering height of 494 feet above their concrete foundations. The construction process was no small feat either. With a dedicated workforce of 300 individuals, it took just three and a half years to complete this monumental project. This photograph transports us back to June 1962 when these brave workmen were diligently working on shaping Scotland's skyline. George Greenwell's lens perfectly captures not only the physical beauty of this bridge but also pays homage to those who contributed their skills and efforts into making it a reality. As we gaze upon this image from Memory Lane Prints, we are reminded of how human ingenuity can conquer even nature's most formidable obstacles – connecting people across rivers while leaving an indelible mark on history.
