EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 4th of July, 1943, when an RAF Sea Rescue Launch was captured in action. The image showcases the power and speed of this remarkable vessel as it roars through the water, creating billowing clouds of spray that resemble a Spitfire in flight. However, this daring rescue mission was not real but staged for the benefit of the camera. Belonging to the Air Sea Rescue Service of RAF Coastal Command, this launch was manned by a skilled crew with diverse backgrounds. The skipper, a former city insurance broker turned Flight Lieutenant, led the team with expertise and precision. Among them was Bert, a 37-year-old leading deck hand from Midlands who had previously worked at a Birmingham glass manufacturer before joining the war effort. In addition to Bert, there were two coxswains on board. Kenneth hailed from Leigh-on-Sea and had been a silk stockings traveler prior to his service while Tom called home his beloved Midlands where he worked in a steel constructional engineering role. Below deck in the engine room were Frank and Lofty; Frank used to make silk stockings in Leicester before dedicating himself to keeping these powerful Napier Lion engines running smoothly while Lofty brought his expertise as a steel constructional engineer into play. Completing this brave crew is Sparks from Dagenham who once worked for a scrap metal merchant. Together they embarked on countless missions like this one - ready to risk their lives saving those lost at sea during World War II. This stunning photograph serves as both an homage to their courage and an enduring reminder of their selfless dedication.
