during England v Germany semi final game
Y2K Football
England met Germany in the semi-final of the World Cup (Italia 90) 1990. The game ended 1-1 after Gary Lineker had equalised for England. Extra time brought no goals and so the game was decided on a penalty shoot out. Unfortunately Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce both missed so West Germany went through. England had started the tournament quietly yet seemed to grow more confident as they progressed through to the semis. Despite the agony of defeat it was Englands best performance in the World Cup since winning the tournament in 1966.
