Bus driven by a volunteer seen here during the 10th day of the General Strike

Bus driven by a volunteer seen here during the 10th day of the General Strike. The policeman and the barbed wire on the bonnet were there to deter strikers from tampering with the engine. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 11th May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment during the 10th day of the General Strike in London, back in May 1926. A bus driven by a dedicated volunteer takes center stage, adorned with a peculiar sight - a policeman and barbed wire on its bonnet. These measures were put in place to deter strikers from tampering with the engine. The General Strike was triggered by failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages, leading millions of workers across various industries to join forces and bring transportation systems to a grinding halt. The strike had such an impact that newspapers ceased printing during this period. In response, the government enlisted volunteers to operate trains and buses while dispatching troops to ensure supplies were moved from London docks. However, clashes between police and crowds erupted throughout different areas, resulting in numerous arrests. Acts of sabotage targeted buses and trains as well, including the infamous derailing of the Flying Scotsman. Despite their valiant efforts, the strike ultimately ended unilaterally on May 12th at the behest of TUC (Trade Union Congress), leaving miners without guarantees for fair treatment. They continued their fight until October but faced bitter defeat. This photograph serves as an enduring reminder of this tumultuous time in history when ordinary individuals took extraordinary measures for what they believed was right – forever etched into our collective memory.
