Mounted special constables seen here on parade in Hyde Park before patrolling the streets
Mounted special constables seen here on parade in Hyde Park before patrolling the streets of London, on the 9th day of the General Strike. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 11th May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment during the General Strike of 1926. In this image, mounted special constables are seen parading in Hyde Park before embarking on their duty to patrol the streets of London. The strike, which began on May 3rd, was a result of failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages. Millions heeded the strike call, causing transportation systems to grind to a halt and newspapers to cease publication. In response, the government enlisted volunteers to operate trains and buses while troops were deployed to ensure supplies reached London docks safely. However, clashes between police and crowds erupted across various areas, leading to numerous arrests with at least 4000 strikers detained. The unrest extended beyond mere protests as acts of sabotage targeted buses and trains; even the renowned Flying Scotsman fell victim to derailing. Despite these challenges faced by both sides, it was ultimately the Trade Union Congress (TUC) that unilaterally called off the strike on May 12th without securing fair treatment for miners who continued their fight until October. This photograph provides an intriguing glimpse into this tumultuous period in history. The presence of mounted special constables wearing pith helmets alongside plain-clothed policemen armed with truncheons showcases the intensity surrounding this industrial dispute. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints, this image serves as a poignant reminder of past struggles and highlights how collective action can shape our society's future trajectory.
