EDITORS COMMENTS
In the summer of 1989, children across the North East were treated to a magnificent spectacle that captured their imaginations. This incredible giant balloon, known as the Skyship 600 airship, visited the region and became a sight to behold for all who witnessed it. Disabled and special needs pupils were given an extraordinary opportunity to experience aviation history firsthand by taking flight in this futuristic airship. Northumbrian Water orchestrated this once-in-a-lifetime chance for these young adventurers as part of a remarkable publicity campaign. The Skyship 600 was one of only fifteen airships ever built at Cardington, an esteemed airship base located in Bedfordshire with a rich history dating back to its days as the Royal Airship Works. Amongst those captivated by this awe-inspiring event was four-year-old Rosie Mason. With wide-eyed wonderment, she watched as the sleek and modern Skyship gracefully descended onto Newcastle's Town Moor. The excitement radiated from her face as she beheld what seemed like an aircraft from another world. This photograph captures not just a moment frozen in time but also represents boundless joy and limitless possibilities for these children whose dreams took flight alongside that colossal balloon on that memorable day in July 1989. It serves as a reminder that sometimes all it takes is one extraordinary experience to ignite our imagination and remind us that "the sky's the limit. "
