Crofter, Callum MacLeod, 63, shoulders his shovel after another day

Crofter, Callum MacLeod, 63, shoulders his shovel after another days work on the road... his OWN road, 29th April 1973.
It weaves two and a half miles through two lines of hills, over two peat bogs and skirts the edge of a 250 foot cliff.
Callum has tackled this enormous task with just a shovel, a barrow and a pick. The story of Callums road started in 1925 when he began his campaign to get Inverness county council to build a road to the village of Arnis on Rsay.
The council refused, and so he went it alone. Building the road one step at a time over several decades

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1973, we see the resilient crofter, Callum MacLeod, shouldering his shovel at the end of another arduous day's work on his own road. This remarkable two and a half-mile stretch winds its way through rugged hills, traverses treacherous peat bogs, and hugs the edge of a towering 250-foot cliff. Undeterred by the daunting challenge before him, Callum has taken on this monumental task armed with nothing more than a shovel, a barrow, and a pick. The story of Callum's road dates back to 1925 when he first embarked on his campaign to convince Inverness county council to construct a road leading to Arnis village on Raasay Island. However, met with refusal from the council time and again, Callum made an audacious decision – he would build it himself. Over several decades and one step at a time, he tirelessly labored towards his vision. This photograph captures not only the physical labor but also the unwavering determination etched upon Callum's weathered face. Clad in his signature flat cap and wearing an expression that blends satisfaction with resilience; he stands as an emblem of independence and single-mindedness. Callum's road-building endeavor serves as an inspiring testament to human ingenuity and perseverance against all odds. It is a reminder that sometimes extraordinary feats can be accomplished by individuals who refuse to accept defeat or wait for others to act.
