AG Meek on Albany Road, Roath, Cardiff, bomb damage in the 1940 s

AG Meek on Albany Road, Roath, Cardiff, bomb damage in the 1940 s. *A SHOE business in its centenary year may be forced to close its founding shop to make way for a convenience store. The family-owned AG Meek shop on Albany Road, Cardiff, has been given notice to leave when its lease expires in May this year n which would bring an end to exactly 100 years of trading on the street. Planning permission is being sought by landlords Tudor Jenkins (Properties) to demolish the store and redevelop the site as a convenience store, with three flats above it. It is not known which company could occupy the premises as yet. Cardiff Council leader Rodney Berman, who also represents voters in the area, pledged yesterday to fight the application. The store was founded in 1912 by Albert George Meek and is still run by David Meek, his grandson. Owner Mr Meek said that it was not yet a iforegone conclusioni that it would close.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of bomb damage on Albany Road in Roath, Cardiff during the 1940s. The devastation caused by World War II is evident as AG Meek's shoe business stands amidst the destruction. Fast forward to present day, and this iconic family-owned shop faces an uncertain future. In its centenary year, AG Meek has been served notice to vacate their founding store when their lease expires in May. This news marks a potential end to a remarkable century of trading on this historic street. Landlords Tudor Jenkins (Properties) are seeking planning permission to demolish the store and replace it with a convenience store and three flats above it. The identity of the new occupant remains unknown at this time. However, Cardiff Council leader Rodney Berman vows to fight against this application, showing support for preserving AG Meek's legacy. Founded in 1912 by Albert George Meek, the business is currently run by his grandson David Meek. Despite these challenges, owner Mr. Meek remains hopeful that closure is not inevitable just yet. This poignant image serves as a reminder of both the resilience displayed during wartime and the ongoing struggle faced by small businesses today amidst changing urban landscapes.
