Proteus Bluebird, the car in which Donald Campbell broke the World Automobile Speed

Proteus Bluebird, the car in which Donald Campbell broke the World Automobile Speed Record has has now made its last run, at 5 mph, at RAF Station, Debden, Essex, 19th June 1966.
Campbell was due to give a demonstration run at a gala there, but 5 days earlier, the car was badly damaged when, with racing driver Peter Bolton at the controls, it smashed through a wooden fence and hedge at 100 mph, sailed 10ft in the air across the Cambridge Chelsford road, and finally spun across a field for 200 yards

Proteus Bluebird - A Bittersweet Farewell to a Record-Breaking Legend

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from June 19,1966, we witness the final run of Proteus Bluebird, the iconic car that propelled Donald Campbell into the annals of automotive history. This remarkable vehicle had shattered the World Automobile Speed Record with its awe-inspiring velocity. However, fate dealt an unexpected blow just days before a gala demonstration at RAF Station in Debden, Essex. Tragically damaged during a heart-stopping incident on the Cambridge Chelsford road five days earlier, Proteus Bluebird's last hurrah was not one of blistering speed but rather a poignant crawl at 5 mph. The memory of its former glory lingered as it gracefully traversed RAF Station for one final time. The image captures both triumph and tragedy; it encapsulates the indomitable spirit that drove Campbell and his team to push boundaries and conquer new frontiers. As spectators watched in solemn admiration, they were reminded of the immense risks undertaken by those who dare to chase dreams beyond imagination. This photograph serves as a testament to Proteus Bluebird's legacy—a symbol of innovation and determination etched forever in our collective memory. It stands as a reminder that even when faced with adversity, true pioneers find solace in their unwavering resolve. Let us honor this extraordinary machine and salute all those who strive for greatness against all odds.
