New Zealand rugby player Keith Murdoch, dodges autograph hunters as he leaves the Angel

New Zealand rugby player Keith Murdoch, dodges autograph hunters as he leaves the Angel Hotel, Cardiff, on December, 3, 1972. *AN EYEWITNESS to the infamous incident at a Cardiff hotel which forced an All Blacks star to live in exile for the past 40 years has spoken out for the first time. Kay Lewis was working as a waitress at the Angel Hotel, on Castle Street, on the night New Zealand prop Keith Murdoch clashed with a security guard in the hotel kitchen. On the 40th anniversary of the incident, which marred the All Blacks 1972 tour of Britain, the Echo last week recapped how the 17st 4lbs forward was kicked off the tour in disgrace. But after switching flights he never made it home to Otago and has instead lived in self-imposed exile in the Australian Outback for the past four decades. A full account of what happened on that fateful night has never been given until now. Grandmother-of-six Kay, 69, contacted the Echo this week after reading our report on Murdoch. Aged 29 at the time, she was a mother of two and worked casual shifts as a waitress at the Angel Hotel where the All Blacks team were staying. 3rd, December, 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on December 3,1972, New Zealand rugby player Keith Murdoch can be seen skillfully evading autograph hunters as he hastily exits the Angel Hotel in Cardiff. Little did anyone know at the time that this moment would mark the beginning of a tumultuous journey for Murdoch. The incident that unfolded that night has become infamous in rugby history. As recounted by Kay Lewis, an eyewitness who worked as a waitress at the hotel, Murdoch found himself embroiled in a clash with a security guard in the hotel kitchen. This altercation ultimately led to his expulsion from the All Blacks' tour of Britain and set off a chain of events that would see him living in self-imposed exile for four decades. Now, on the 40th anniversary of this fateful incident, Kay Lewis has come forward to share her account publicly for the first time. At age 29 and juggling motherhood with casual shifts at the Angel Hotel, she was present during these dramatic events involving one of rugby's most enigmatic figures. Murdoch's decision to switch flights and disappear into Australia's vast Outback rather than returning home to Otago remains shrouded in mystery. However, through this powerful image captured by Western Mail Archive and brought back to life by Memory Lane Prints, we are reminded of both his sporting prowess and his enduring legacy as an enigma within New Zealand rugby folklore.
