EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic print from 1979, we witness a momentous occasion as the Across Charity unveils its latest achievement - the Ambulance Mark V, affectionately known as the West Midlands 80. The grand launch event took place outside the prestigious Grand Hotel in Birmingham and was nothing short of a spectacle. Midland comedians Don Maclean and Lenny Henry, both instrumental in raising funds for this noble cause, stole the show with their traffic-stopping act. In an extraordinary display of camaraderie, Don assisted bearded driver John Hudgell in transporting a lively Lenny across the street on a stretcher. The sheer determination and enthusiasm emanating from these individuals were palpable. The significance of this event cannot be overstated; it marked the introduction of what would become known as the world's biggest ambulance - a jumbo-sized vehicle designed to provide unparalleled emergency medical care. This groundbreaking innovation promised to revolutionize healthcare services in not just Birmingham but also beyond. As we gaze upon this image captured by Birmingham Post and Mail Archive, we are reminded of an era when entertainment programmes like Crackerjack dominated television screens. However, let us not forget that behind all the laughter lies genuine compassion and dedication towards improving lives. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder of how communities can come together to support vital causes while showcasing remarkable talent along the way.
