Policeman on traffic duty seen here directing cyclist and pedestrians on High Holborn

Policeman on traffic duty seen here directing cyclist and pedestrians on High Holborn, on the 8th day of the General Strike. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 10th May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the chaotic streets of High Holborn during the General Strike of 1926. In this snapshot, a diligent policeman can be seen bravely directing a swarm of cyclists and pedestrians through the bustling intersection. The strike, which erupted from failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages, paralyzed transportation systems nationwide while newspapers remained silent. To combat the standstill, the government enlisted volunteers to operate trains and buses while troops were deployed to ensure crucial supplies made it through London's docks. However, tensions ran high as clashes between police and crowds became commonplace in various areas. The unrest led to numerous arrests with at least 4000 strikers being detained. The turmoil extended beyond mere protests as acts of sabotage targeted buses and trains, including the infamous derailing of the iconic Flying Scotsman. Despite its widespread impact on society, the strike was unilaterally called off by the TUC on May 12th without securing fair treatment for miners who continued their fight until October when they suffered a bitter defeat. This image serves as a powerful reminder of an era marked by industrial disputes that brought cities like High Holborn to a grinding halt. It captures not only the chaos but also highlights individuals like this dedicated policeman who worked tirelessly amidst adversity to maintain order in turbulent times.
