The Girl Horn Blower - A Timeless Tradition in Ripon

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1940, we witness a remarkable moment in the history of Ripon, North Yorkshire. The image showcases young Muriel Blackburn, daughter of Mr. Harold Blackburn, proudly taking on the esteemed position of the city's Horn Blower. For centuries, it has been customary for Ripon's famous horn to be sounded at curfew every evening at the four corners of Market Place. This ancient ceremony dates back all the way to 886 and holds great significance for the community. Muriel's dedication and talent shine through as she confidently dons her traditional costume and grasps the musical instrument known as "the hornet". Despite being only twelve years old, she possesses a skill that eludes many men – coaxing a resounding blast from the horn for an impressive twelve seconds. This particular occasion is even more special as there is no deputy available to fill in for Muriel's father when he falls ill. Stepping up with grace and determination beyond her tender age, Muriel embraces this responsibility wholeheartedly. Her infectious smile radiates happiness and pride as she carries on this cherished tradition that has united generations throughout time. This snapshot captures not just a single girl blowing a horn but also represents resilience, heritage, and community spirit that have defined Ripon over centuries. As we admire this extraordinary photograph from Memory Lane Prints today, let us celebrate Muriel Blackburn's
