News press conference after Britains first heart transplant was successfully carried out (3rd May) by a team of 18 doctors and nurses at the National Heart Hospital in Marylebone, London. Pictured Saturday 4th May 1968. The operation, which was led by South African-born surgeon Donald Ross, was undertaken on Frederick West aged 45. It took more than seven hours to complete. The donor, Patrick Ryan, was a 26 year old labourer. Pictured.
