EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 18th July 1986, we witness the determination of a thriving BMX club as they prepare their track for a momentous event. The Cleveland BMX club, located at Redcar Racecourse, is spreading about 20 tonnes of fine dolomite on their circuit in anticipation of the first live TV coverage of BMX in Britain. With an impressive turnout of 700 riders expected next month, the pressure is mounting for the club to ensure that everything is perfect. However, there's one major obstacle standing in their way - they don't have a roller to flatten the dolomite. In a desperate plea for assistance, the club hopes that some heavyweight help will roll up and lend them a hand. Brian Atkinson, the press officer for the club, explains that they have already secured an arrangement with Tyne Tees Television to showcase races on 8th August. Time is running out and being unable to find one of these essential motorised rollers seems like an insurmountable challenge. This snapshot perfectly captures not only the excitement surrounding this pivotal moment in British BMX history but also highlights how dedicated volunteers are crucial to making such events possible. As children donning helmets eagerly await their turn on these action-packed bicycles, it serves as a reminder of how outdoor leisure activities can shape our youth and foster lifelong passions for sport and adventure.
