Belgian gun dog teams take a rest on the road to Hofstade 28th September 1914
At the beginning of the First World War the Belgian Army fielded 102 machine guns. Many of these guns were pulled on small gun carriages by specially trained Belgian Mastiff dog teams, which were more than capable of drawing the 60lbs weight of a Maxim machine gun. The dog teams were able to pull the machine gun carriages and ammunition, weighing in total up to 200lbs, for long distances at a 4 to 5 mile per hour pace

EDITORS COMMENTS
Belgian gun dog teams take a well-deserved rest on the road to Hofstade, 28th September 1914. At the beginning of the First World War, the Belgian Army relied on their trusty canine companions to assist in their military efforts. These remarkable Belgian Mastiffs were specially trained to pull small gun carriages carrying powerful Maxim machine guns. With unwavering strength and determination, these loyal dogs effortlessly hauled heavy loads weighing up to 200lbs, including ammunition necessary for battle. Their incredible stamina allowed them to maintain an impressive pace of 4 to 5 miles per hour over long distances. In this photograph from the Daily Mirror Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, we witness a small group of exhausted soldiers taking a momentary break alongside their faithful four-legged comrades. The weariness is evident on their faces as they lean against the carriage and indulge in some much-needed respite. The image captures not only the physical toll that war takes on men but also highlights the extraordinary bond between humans and animals during times of conflict. These brave gun dog teams played an integral role in supporting troops at the Western Front during World War One. As we reflect upon this poignant snapshot from history, let us remember and honor both those who fought valiantly for our freedom and those unsung heroes - these courageous Belgian Mastiffs who stood by their side.
