Twenty four year old warden Mrs Mary Couchman crouches down to protect her young son

Twenty four year old warden Mrs Mary Couchman crouches down to protect her young son Brian and his two friends during an air in a Kent village during the Second World War.
She was smoking a cigarette on a break between warnings in the wardens post when she saw her four year old son playing some distance away with two friends. When the sirens sounded again she ran out of the post and towards the children with bombs falling around her, instinctively protecting them from flying shrapnel and debris by huddling over them.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of unwavering bravery and maternal instinct during the tumultuous times of the Second World War. In this powerful image, twenty-four-year-old warden Mrs Mary Couchman can be seen crouching down to shield her young son Brian and his two friends from the horrors of an air raid in a peaceful Kent village. As Mrs Couchman takes a break between warnings in her wardens post, she notices her four-year-old son playing at a distance with his companions. Suddenly, the piercing sirens sound once again, signaling imminent danger. Without hesitation, this courageous mother abandons safety and rushes towards the children as bombs rain down around them. In an act of pure selflessness, Mrs Couchman envelops the little ones within her protective embrace, shielding them from flying shrapnel and debris that threaten their lives. Her face etched with determination amidst fear and terror, she becomes their guardian angel amidst chaos. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary people on the home front during wartime. It encapsulates both the fragility of life during those dark days but also showcases extraordinary acts of heroism displayed by individuals like Mrs Mary Couchman. Taken in October 1940 by George Greenwell, this remarkable image immortalizes not only one woman's bravery but also represents countless untold stories of love and sacrifice that defined an entire generation living through World War II.
