In this photo print, we are transported back to December 1953 at Arthurs Cooprage in Newcastle-on-Tyne. The image captures a unique tradition among coopers, where the apprentice's completion of training is marked by being rolled in a barrel. However, on this momentous occasion, the tables were turned as the boss himself willingly underwent this symbolic ritual. The significance of this event was twofold - it not only celebrated the firm's remarkable 100-year anniversary but also honored Mr. John Arthur, who had dedicated four decades to its success. As he was playfully rolled inside the wooden vessel, surrounded by his loyal employees and fellow craftsmen, an air of camaraderie filled the room. The photograph beautifully showcases the architectural charm of Arthurs Cooprage with rows upon rows of barrels neatly stacked against weathered walls. The men involved in this age-old trade stand proudly beside their boss; their clothing reflecting both tradition and practicality. This snapshot from Memory Lane Prints transports us into a world steeped in customs and industry that defined an era long gone. It serves as a reminder that even amidst hard work and dedication, there is always room for celebration and joy. As soon as the rolling ceremony concluded, barrels were opened to reveal refreshing beer for all present – marking yet another cherished memory etched within these time-honored walls.
