Evacuation of Island of Soay. Some of the 27 people of Soay Island banded together for the removal of their effects. They loaded their goods and personal belongings aboard a steamer waiting to take them to their new home in Craignure, Isle of Mull. Soay is an island just off the coast of Skye, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The Local Authority is Highland. Most of the population was evacuated to Mull in June 1953, since when the island has been sparsely populated. 22nd June 1953

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this vintage print by Allan, we witness a poignant moment in history - the evacuation of Soay Island. In an act of unity and resilience, some of the 27 islanders gather together to bid farewell to their beloved home. Loaded with their treasured possessions and personal belongings, they embark on a steamer bound for Craignure, Isle of Mull. The year is 1953, and the emotions are palpable as families embrace one another tightly before setting sail towards an uncertain future. Excitement mingles with sadness as children clutch onto their parents' hands, eager for new adventures yet reluctant to leave behind familiar shores. Soay Island, nestled off the coast of Skye in Scotland's Inner Hebrides, had been home to these resilient souls for generations. However, circumstances have forced them to seek refuge elsewhere. The Highland Local Authority orchestrated this mass evacuation due to unknown reasons that forever altered the island's destiny. As the vessel cuts through shimmering waters under a summer sky, hope flickers within each heart onboard. They carry memories etched into every corner of their being - memories that will forever tie them to Soay Island. Today, Soay remains sparsely populated since that fateful June day when its inhabitants departed en masse. This evocative photograph serves as a testament not only to human resilience but also as a reminder of how landscapes change and communities adapt throughout time.
