Yurtas the peculiar tents which are used as dewellings by the Kirghiz nomad tribes of Russia. Owing to the warm weatherproof nature of these huts, which are easily transportable, they are being adopted by the Russian Government for the use of troops, and Kirghiz instructors have been engaged to teach the men how to erect and dismantle the huts.
The Yurtas seen in the picture were presented to the Russian Army by the Governor of the Tourgaysk district M Eurasmann. Circa December 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the unique Yurtas, traditional tents used as dwellings by the Kirghiz nomad tribes of Russia. Renowned for their exceptional weatherproof qualities and portability, these peculiar huts have caught the attention of the Russian Government. In fact, they are now being embraced as accommodations for troops in various locations. To ensure a seamless transition, Kirghiz instructors have been enlisted to educate soldiers on how to erect and dismantle these remarkable structures. The Yurtas captured in this image were generously presented to the Russian Army by M Eurasmann, Governor of the Tourgaysk district around December 1915 during World War I. The photograph transports us back to that era on the Eastern Front, where allied armies faced intense conflict. In this snapshot from history, we witness military officers and soldiers dressed in Turkish uniforms utilizing these innovative shelters amidst war and turmoil. It serves as a testament to human adaptability and resourcefulness even in times of great adversity. Preserved by George Mewes through Memory Lane Prints, this picture offers a glimpse into an extraordinary chapter of our past when ancient traditions met modern warfare strategies. As we explore its details today, it prompts reflection on how cultures intertwine during moments of crisis while highlighting the resilience displayed by both nomadic tribes and armed forces alike.
