Lerwick Up Helly Aa festival is a tradition that originated in the 1880s. Since then the festival has been an annual occurrence in the Shetland calendar. Our Picture Shows. The Up Helly Aa procession. After nightfall the replica Viking long ship galley is dragged through the streets of the town in a torchlight procession. The torchbearers are the members of all the guizer squads, led by the Jarl Squad. Each squad chooses a theme and dresses accordingly. The themes are very varied, some historical, some topical or satirical. 27th January 1976
