EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early days of renowned journalist David Wastell's career. In this snapshot from September 27th, 1983, we catch a glimpse of a young and ambitious Wastell, brimming with potential and determination. Having worked for esteemed publications such as Tavistock Times and Sunday Independent under the prestigious Mirror Group Newspapers Grad Trainee Scheme in the late '70s and early '80s, Wastell quickly made his mark in the world of journalism. His talent as a feature writer was recognized by Scottish Daily Record where he contributed between 1981 and 1986. However, it was during his time at Sunday Telegraph that Wastell truly flourished. Initially starting as a reporter/feature writer in 1986, he swiftly climbed up the ranks to become their political correspondent from 1988 to 1992. This role paved the way for him to take on greater responsibilities within the publication - serving as their political editor until 1998 before embarking on an illustrious journey overseas. Wastell's journalistic prowess led him across continents; he became Washington correspondent from 1998 to 2002 before assuming positions such as deputy foreign editor (2002-2005) and ultimately foreign editor (2005-present). This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to David Wastell's remarkable career trajectory within media circles throughout multiple decades.
