Forty French boys and girls aged between 9 - 11 from Boulogne are starting a fortnights schooling at Cannonbury Primary School, Islington, London, N1. They came with forty Islington children who stayed with them in Boulogne, and in whose homes they will stay now.
The exchange was the idea of Mrs Hilda Wurr headmistress of Cannonbury School where all the children are taught French from the age of 8.
In Boulogne the English children had tuition all in French at the Ecole Cary for boys and girls at the Ecole Frederic Sauvage. But now it is the turn of the French children to have their lessons in English in a double mixed class with English boys and girls.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment in the summer of 1967, as forty French boys and girls aged between 9-11 embark on a fortnight-long schooling experience at Cannonbury Primary School in Islington, London. The exchange program was initiated by Mrs. Hilda Wurr, the visionary headmistress of Cannonbury School, where all students are taught French from the tender age of 8. These young adventurers arrived with their counterparts from Islington who had previously stayed with them in Boulogne. Now it is their turn to immerse themselves in English culture and language by staying with local families. The educational journey began for these bright minds at Ecole Cary and Ecole Frederic Sauvage in Boulogne, where they received intensive tuition entirely conducted in French. In this remarkable image captured by Bela Zola, we witness the eager faces of two young girls engrossed in learning to read English alongside their classmates. Their concentration is palpable as they navigate through books that will unlock new worlds for them. This photograph not only encapsulates the spirit of cultural exchange but also highlights the power of education transcending borders. It serves as a testament to Mrs. Wurr's commitment to fostering global understanding among her students and nurturing linguistic skills that would undoubtedly shape their futures positively.
