Coal drives our ships, smelts, our iron ore, gives us gas and electricity for lighting and heating, yields a host of useful by-products and provides one of our most valuable exports. No wonder that the miners strenuous labours, often carried on at great peril, place them in the front rank of Britains workers. Their total output of coal last year was 213, 760, 556 tons
