EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a momentous encounter between the Duke of Edinburgh and Piers Corbyn. The year is 1969, as the Queen and her husband visit Imperial College of Science and Technology to inaugurate the new College Block and Libraries Building. As they grace the event with their presence, a young 22-year-old Piers Corbyn stands before them, donning a beard and glasses. Piers, at that time serving as President of the Students Union, had previously attempted to present three letters to Her Majesty but was unsuccessful during their first meeting. Undeterred by his initial setback, he seized this second opportunity to personally hand over these mysterious letters. It remains unknown what secrets or messages were contained within those envelopes. The photograph captures an intriguing moment in history when politics intertwines with royalty. Notably, Piers Corbyn's significance extends beyond this encounter; he would later become known as the brother of Jeremy Corbyn—Labour Party leader in 2015. Through Tom King's lens, we are transported back to London in the swinging sixties—a time of cultural change and political activism. This image serves as a reminder that even amidst grand ceremonies attended by esteemed figures like the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II themselves, it is often ordinary individuals who hold extraordinary stories waiting to be unveiled.
