A scene of chaos and confusion as firemen turn the hose on a demonstration of unemployed
A scene of chaos and confusion as firemen turn the hose on a demonstration of unemployed workers organised by the National Unemployed Workers Movement (NUWM) at the junction of Fairfield Street Manchester. The march was a protest against cuts to unemployment benefits, Health Care, Maternity and Child Welfare grants being imposed on unemployed workers. They marched down Ashton Old Road from Openshaw but when they reached the junction of Downing Street and Fairfield Street, a row of mounted policemen barred their way. Behind the horses was a double row of foot police and behind them a barricade of tramcars, double decker buses and other vehicles. 7th October 1931

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of chaos and confusion during a demonstration organized by the National Unemployed Workers Movement (NUWM) in Manchester. The scene depicts firemen turning their hoses on unemployed workers who were protesting against harsh cuts to unemployment benefits, healthcare, maternity, and child welfare grants. The march began peacefully as the protesters made their way down Ashton Old Road from Openshaw. However, when they reached the junction of Downing Street and Fairfield Street, their path was blocked by a formidable line of mounted policemen. Behind them stood rows of foot police officers and an imposing barricade formed by tramcars, double-decker buses, and other vehicles. In this powerful image captured on October 7th, 1931 - amidst the backdrop of economic depression - one can sense the tension between those fighting for social justice and those tasked with maintaining law and order. It serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by working-class communities during this era. The photograph not only showcases the determination of these unemployed workers but also highlights how public demonstrations played a crucial role in shaping political discourse at that time. As we reflect upon this historical moment through Memory Lane Prints' lens, it prompts us to consider our own society's ongoing challenges surrounding labor issues and inequality – reminding us that progress is often born out of such scenes filled with passion and resilience.
