For a brief moment outside the Dorchester Hotel six students from Queen Mary
For a brief moment outside the Dorchester Hotel six students from Queen Marys College, London, nearly brought of the kidnapping that members of THRUSH have been trying to effect for months - that of Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum). When Illya left the hotel bound for an engagement with the BBC at Shepherds Bush after lunch, six students surrounded him and demanded he go for a half hour ride round London to publicise their rag week. Within seconds the strong arm of the law appeared, and the attempted kidnapping disintegrated. Mr McCallums agent (NOT Napoleon Solo) explained that he had a busy day with private engagements - and as much as he would have liked to help them, time was against them. 17th March 1966

EDITORS COMMENTS
For a brief moment outside the Dorchester Hotel, six students from Queen Mary's College, London, nearly succeeded in carrying out the long-awaited kidnapping plot orchestrated by members of THRUSH. Their target? None other than the dashing Illya Kuryakin, portrayed by David McCallum. As Illya stepped out of the hotel on his way to a BBC engagement at Shepherds Bush after lunch, he found himself surrounded by these audacious students who demanded he join them for a half-hour ride around London to promote their upcoming rag week. However, fate had different plans for this daring escapade. Within seconds, law enforcement swiftly intervened and foiled the attempted abduction. Mr. McCallum's agent (not Napoleon Solo) clarified that despite his desire to assist them, his busy schedule with private engagements left him no choice but to decline their request. This photograph captures an extraordinary moment in time - a clash between youthful enthusiasm and celebrity intrigue. It serves as a reminder of the allure and excitement surrounding television personalities during this vibrant era of entertainment in 1960s London. Preserved within Memory Lane Prints' collection, this image transports us back to an age when actors like David McCallum were not only admired on screen but also faced unexpected adventures off-screen.
