Gales which topped 100 miles an hour battered three giant concrete towers to rubble at
Gales which topped 100 miles an hour battered three giant concrete towers to rubble at Britains " pride of Europe" power station. As the winds reached their peak in the north, the 375ft cooling towers, built from 24, 000 tons of concrete and costing 290, 000 each, crumpled one by one into the ruins pictured here. The towers had only recently been completed at the 50 acre site near Leeds, Yorkshire, where the 68, 000, 000 Ferrybridge C station is under construction. 1st November 1965

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating power of nature as gales, reaching speeds over 100 miles an hour, mercilessly battered three colossal concrete towers at Britain's renowned "pride of Europe" power station. The sheer force of the winds reduced these towering structures to mere rubble, leaving behind a haunting scene of destruction. These mammoth cooling towers, standing at a staggering height of 375 feet and constructed using a whopping 24,000 tons of concrete each, succumbed one by one to the relentless storm. The photograph showcases the aftermath of this catastrophic event that took place on November 1st, 1965. Located near Leeds in West Yorkshire, this ambitious construction project was part of the impressive Ferrybridge C station spanning across a vast 50-acre site. It is evident from this image that no expense was spared in building these monumental towers which cost £290,000 apiece. The resilience and dedication put forth by workers during their construction are overshadowed by Mother Nature's fury unleashed upon completion. This snapshot serves as a stark reminder that even man-made marvels can be humbled by the raw power and unpredictability of weather phenomena. Preserved through Varley's lens for posterity, this print offers us a glimpse into history—a testament to both human ambition and nature's awe-inspiring might colliding in an unforgettable moment captured forever in time.
