EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the vibrant Easter season of 1961. Standing tall and proud is a Giant Easter Egg, towering over three feet high and brimming with an astonishing 75 pounds of delectable chocolate and sweets. This magnificent creation was destined for the South London County Council Children's home, bringing joy to the young hearts residing there. The story behind this extraordinary gift adds another layer of warmth to our hearts. Rose Margiotta, the lucky winner of this colossal egg in a raffle, selflessly decided to donate it to those less fortunate. Seeking assistance from the Mirror Advice Bureau for its safe delivery, she found herself connected with Leslie Hubble, Head of Mirror Readers Advice Bureau. With great care and excitement filling the air on that memorable Monday morning in April 1961, Leslie Hubble accompanied driver Tom Harnett as they embarked on their mission using one of Mirror's trusty delivery vans. The image captures not only a physical journey but also symbolizes kindness and compassion reaching out through layers of chocolate goodness. This snapshot from yesteryears reminds us how acts of generosity can brighten lives even during challenging times. It showcases the power newspapers held in promoting goodwill campaigns like these while highlighting their role as vehicles for public relations stunts that touched communities far beyond commercial interests.
