The Imperial German Navy, Battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann Circa 1918

The Imperial German Navy, Battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann Circa 1918.
She was the German navys first major turbine-powered warship. When the Von der Tann was commissioned in 1910 she was the fastest dreadnought-type warship afloat, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 27 knots.
The Von der Tann participated in a number of fleet actions during the First World War, including several bombardments of the English coast, the Gorleston Raid of 3 November 1914 and the raid on the Yorkshire coast 16th December 1914. She was present at the Battle of Jutland, where she destroyed the British battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable in the opening minutes of the engagement.
Following the end of the war in November 1918, Von der Tann, along with most of the High Seas Fleet, was interned at Scapa Flow pending a decision by the Allies as to the fate of the fleet. The ship met her end on the 21st June 1919 when her German caretaker crew scuttled her along with other ships of the High Sea Fleet to prevent their division amongst the Allied navies. The wreck was raised in 1930, and scrapped at Rosyth from 1931 to 1934

The Imperial German Navy, Battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann Circa 1918 - A Symbol of Power and Tragedy

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the era of the First World War, showcasing the mighty Battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann. As the German navy's first turbine-powered warship, she represented a significant technological advancement in naval warfare. Commissioned in 1910, Von der Tann boasted impressive speed capabilities, making her the fastest dreadnought-type warship at that time. With a top speed exceeding 27 knots, she was a force to be reckoned with on the high seas. Throughout her service during World War I, Von der Tann played an active role in various fleet actions. She participated in several bombardments of the English coast and took part in notable raids such as Gorleston Raid and raid on Yorkshire coast. However, it was during the historic Battle of Jutland that she made her mark by swiftly destroying HMS Indefatigable within minutes of engagement. Sadly, like many other vessels from Germany's High Seas Fleet after the war ended in November 1918, Von der Tann faced an uncertain fate. Interned at Scapa Flow while awaiting decisions from Allied forces regarding their future use or division among navies; tragedy struck on June 21st, 1919 when her German caretaker crew scuttled her along with other ships to prevent them falling into enemy hands. Though lost beneath waves for years before being raised and eventually scrapped between 1931-1934 at Rosyth; this print serves as a poignant reminder of both power and sacrifice embodied by The Imperial German Navy's Battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann circa 1918.
