The Militiamen were the result of The Military Training Act 1939 which was an Act of Parliament passed by the Conservative administration on 26 May 1939, in a period of international tension that led to World War II. The Act applied to males aged 20 and 21 years old who were to be called up for six months full-time military training, and then transferred to the Reserve..
Men called up were to be known as militiamen to distinguish them from the regular army. To emphasise this distinction, each man was issued with a suit in addition to a uniform. The intention was for the first intake to undergo six months of basic training before being discharged into an active reserve. They would then be recalled for short training periods and attend annual camps.
There was one registration under the Act, of the first cohort of liable males, on Saturday 3 June 1939, and call-up for these men followed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Memory Lane Prints takes us back to the summer of 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II. It captures a group of militiamen in training at Oswestry camp on 27th July 1939. These young men, aged 20 and 21 years old, were part of The Military Training Act passed by the Conservative administration earlier that year. In this image, we see these dedicated individuals receiving instruction on various types of anti-aircraft guns. As they diligently learn their craft, it is evident that they are preparing themselves for the challenges and dangers that lay ahead. The Militiamen were distinct from the regular army and were issued with suits in addition to their uniforms to emphasize this difference. After six months of intensive training, they would be discharged into an active reserve but would still be required to attend short training periods and annual camps. This photograph not only serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men but also provides us with a glimpse into a significant period in history when tensions were high and war loomed on the horizon. It stands as a testament to their dedication and commitment to defending their country during one of its most challenging times. As we reflect upon this image, let us remember those who served selflessly during World War II and honor their memory for generations to come.
