The Gaiety Theatre, in The Aldwych, London pictured in 1908.
The Gaiety Theatre was a West End theatre in London, located on Aldwych at the eastern end of the Strand. The theatre was first established as the Strand Musick Hall in 1864 on the former site of the Lyceum Theatre. In 1868, it became known as the Gaiety Theatre and was, at first, known for music hall and then for musical burlesque, pantomime and operetta performances. From 1868 to the 1890s, it had a major influence on the development of modern musical comedy.
It survived throughout the first half of the 20th Century, but due to bomb damage and cultural change it was demolished in 1956.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Gaiety Theatre, a magnificent landmark of London's West End, stands proudly in this print from 1908. Located on Aldwych at the eastern end of the Strand, it holds a rich history within its walls. Originally established as the Strand Musick Hall in 1864, it quickly transformed into the renowned Gaiety Theatre in 1868. Throughout its existence, this iconic venue became synonymous with music hall performances and later gained fame for its exceptional musical burlesque, pantomime, and operetta shows. From 1868 to the 1890s, it played an instrumental role in shaping modern musical comedy as we know it today. Despite enduring through much of the first half of the twentieth century, The Gaiety Theatre eventually succumbed to bomb damage and cultural shifts that led to its demolition in 1956. However, this remarkable image transports us back to November 7th, 1908 when bustling traffic fills the streets surrounding The Gaiety Theatre. In this snapshot frozen in time lies a glimpse into Edwardian-era London: horse-drawn carts traverse busy corners while pedestrians navigate their way through entertainment-filled streets. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an era long gone but not forgotten.
