Story : At 19.05 hours on 15 Sep 1939 the unescorted Truro (Master John Charles Egner) was stopped and searched by U-36 about 150 miles east of Kinnaird Head. Kinnaird Head is a headland projecting into the North Sea, within the town of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire on the east coast of Scotland. 15The ship carried contraband, so the crew was ordered into the lifeboats and the ship sunk with a torpedo after a first torpedo was a dud and the Germans were not able to hit the ship with their guns due to high seas. The survivors were picked up by the Belgian trawlers Nautilus and Edwaard Van Flaaneren, transferred to one of the trawlers and landed at Aberdeen on 17 September.

Amidst raging seas and desperate moments, fate intervened when one torpedo failed to detonate. However, luck soon ran out for those aboard as another struck true. The ship succumbed to icy depths while brave survivors clung to hope amidst chaos. Miraculously all twenty souls endured this harrowing ordeal; no lives were lost that day. Belgian trawlers Nautilus and Edwaard Van Flaaneren plucked these resilient sailors from certain demise and carried them safely ashore at Aberdeen two days later. This poignant image serves as a testament to human resilience amidst conflict - an enduring symbol of unity and survival during World War II.
