EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the devastating aftermath of The Blitz on business premises in Weston Super Mare, Somerset. Taken in June 1942, it showcases a street that remains unidentified due to the extensive destruction caused by the air raid. During two fateful nights, June 28 and 29, Weston experienced what can only be described as "hell on earth". Over 10,000 savage incendiary devices and 52 high-explosive bombs rained down upon the town. The flames engulfing the crumbling ruins were so intense that they could be seen all the way from Wales. This marked one of Weston's darkest moments during World War II as it suffered its most destructive days at war. The image itself was captured around June 30th when hope must have been scarce amidst such devastation. This photograph serves as a stark reminder of the horrors inflicted upon innocent civilians during this period of conflict. It symbolizes not only the physical ruin left behind but also represents resilience and strength in rebuilding shattered lives and communities. As we reflect on this haunting image from history, let us honor those who endured unimaginable hardships during these trying times. May their stories serve as a testament to our shared humanity and remind us never to forget the sacrifices made for peace and freedom.
