First photographs of the Navys successful surprise raid on Sabang and Lhenga airfields in Northern Sumatra at dawn on 19th April 1944. Bombers escorted by fighters, operated from aircraft
carriers which were covered by a powerful Allied fleet.Heavy bombs were used, the fighters strafed ground targets. At Sabang many direct hits were made on the dockyards, power station, wharf, barracks hangars, workshops and the radio station.
Twenty two enemy planes were destroyed on the ground, an oil tank hit by a 1000lb bomb was left burning with smoke rising to 700ft.
One Allied aircraft was forced to land in the sea, but the American pilot, Lieut. Klahn was saved by one of the Royal Navy submarines under the command of Lieut. Cdr. Collett DSC, RN.
The submarine surfaced and carried out the rescue under fire from Japanese shore batteries.
Picture shows: Vast columns of smoke rising from bombed oil tanks and machine gunned Japanese planes. Smoke from burning docks, warehouses and installations adds to the general picture of Allied success.
