This photograph, taken during a night attack by Allied aircraft on Piraeus harbour
This photograph, taken during a night attack by Allied aircraft on Piraeus harbour, Greece, on 11th - 12th January 1944, shows bombs bursting in the target area. Hits are seen on quayside warehouses and factories, and others among congested shipping. The large white mass seen in the centre of the harbour is the result of a direct hit causing an explosion. The photographs shows clearly that the attack was directed against the harbour facilities, and that the bombs were
particularly well aimed. Reports indicate that a destroyer and at least thirty sailing vessels were
destroyed in this attack. The German ability to hold Rhodes, Crete and the Aegean islands depends
largely on supplies carried from Piraeus in these small craft, and this harbour is therefore a vital
military objective which is likely to be bombed again at any time.
The attacks are directed against harbour installations arid shipping; every effort will
be made to avoid the bombing of non-military objectives

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken during a night attack by Allied aircraft on Piraeus harbour, Greece, on 11th - 12th January 1944, captures the intense chaos and destruction that unfolded in the target area. The bombs bursting in the air create a terrifying spectacle as they rain down upon quayside warehouses and factories. Amidst the devastation, hits can be seen among congested shipping vessels. The focal point of this image is a large white mass at the center of the harbor, resulting from a direct hit that caused an explosion. This powerful strike exemplifies the precision with which these bombs were aimed at their intended military targets. Reports indicate that not only were numerous sailing vessels destroyed but also a destroyer fell victim to this relentless assault. Piraeus harbour holds immense strategic importance for German forces as it serves as a crucial supply route for Rhodes, Crete, and other Aegean islands. Consequently, it becomes evident why this harbor has become such an attractive military objective for repeated bombings. It is important to note that while these attacks primarily focus on harbor installations and shipping facilities vital to enemy operations, every effort will be made to avoid targeting non-military objectives. This photograph stands as both evidence of successful strikes against key military infrastructure and a reminder of ongoing threats faced by those who rely on this port.
