On the morning of 21st November 1944, Yugoslav Partisans entered the enemy-held town of Risan which had been cut off from communication with the main force, except by sea.
After days of continuous shelling by the British and sniping by the Partisans, the enemy withdrew overnight and Partisans moved in the next morning.
Picture shows: Partisans taking a rest after the battle for
Risan in the fort of Grkobac, 1 mile north of Ledenice.
The walls, of this fort are 3 feet thick in some places, with

EDITORS COMMENTS
On the morning of 21st November 1944, a historic moment unfolded as Yugoslav Partisans bravely entered the enemy-held town of Risan. Isolated from their main force, communication with Risan was only possible by sea. The British relentlessly shelled and the Partisans skillfully sniped at the enemy for days until they finally withdrew overnight. As dawn broke, the victorious Partisans moved in to claim their hard-fought prize. This print captures a poignant scene amidst the aftermath of battle. Resting within the formidable walls of Grkobac fort, located just one mile north of Ledenice, exhausted but triumphant Partisans find solace after their arduous struggle for Risan. These ancient walls stand testament to both resilience and strength; some parts measuring an impressive three feet thick and fortified with steel shutters that even British artillery bombardment struggled to penetrate. Transported back in time to this pivotal moment during World War II in former Yugoslavia, we witness not only physical damage inflicted upon buildings but also witness bravery displayed by these armed forces fighting for freedom against oppression. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of those who fought valiantly during this tumultuous period in history. As an official Memory Lane Prints image capturing this significant event from our past, it allows us to reflect on the sacrifices made and honor those who played a role in shaping our world today.
