Nine survivors of a blazing American Superfortress plane which crashed in the Indian

Nine survivors of a blazing American Superfortress plane which crashed in the Indian Ocean have been recovering in hospital in Calcutta after rescue by two RAF Catalina flying boats.
The Catalina flew 800 miles out to sea and on two successive days brought back the men to an Eastern Air Command Base.
The fliers were survivors from the crew of a B-29 who had baled out after a Japanese fighter had shot out their number one engine and started a fire in the wing.
One Catalina picked up five of the men in the sea while the other flying boat took four men off a submarine which had piked them out of the water.
Picture shows: Two members of the aircraft going over to the submarine in a rubber dinghy to collect the four American survivors for their 800 mile trip track to safety.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the incredible story of nine survivors from a blazing American Superfortress plane that crashed in the Indian Ocean during World War II. After their harrowing ordeal, these brave men were rescued by two RAF Catalina flying boats and brought to safety in Calcutta. The Catalina flying boats embarked on an extraordinary 800-mile journey out to sea, making two separate trips to retrieve all nine survivors. The fliers had been part of a B-29 crew when their aircraft was attacked by a Japanese fighter, causing severe damage and igniting a fire in the wing. Forced to bail out, they found themselves stranded at sea. In this particular image, we witness two members of the aircraft approaching a submarine in a rubber dinghy to collect four American survivors for their long trip back to safety. It is April 1945, and tensions are high as these courageous individuals make their way towards rescue. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those serving in armed forces during World War II. It showcases not only the heroism displayed by both aircrews but also highlights the collaborative efforts between different nations' military units. Preserved through time thanks to Memory Lane Prints, this image immortalizes an extraordinary moment amidst one of history's greatest conflicts - symbolizing hope, resilience, and humanity's unyielding spirit even amidst adversity.
