EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history during the 1940s. Lady MacRobert of Douneside, Tarland, Aberdeenshire proudly presents the Royal Air Force (RAF) with four Hurricanes that will soon embark on a crucial mission in the Middle East. These aircraft hold immense sentimental value as three of them are named after Lady MacRobert's brave sons who tragically lost their lives while serving as airmen. The fourth Hurricane stands out with its unique name, "Salute to Russia" paying homage to the unwavering courage displayed by the Soviet people. Adorned with the proud arms of the MacRobert clan, these planes will join a squadron where Lady MacRobert's second son, Sir Roderic, was stationed before his untimely demise at Mosul in May 1941. In this particular image from September 1942, we witness one of these remarkable MacRobert Hurricane planes resting on a desert airfield. The aircraft exudes strength and resilience amidst an arid landscape synonymous with conflict and war. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, it serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and determination during World War II. This photograph encapsulates not only military history but also honors those who fought valiantly for their countries' causes. It is an enduring testament to bravery and unity among nations engaged in battle against common adversaries - an indelible chapter etched within our collective memory.
