The first RAF Flying Fortresses to land at Lagens Airfield in the Portuguese owned Azores

The first RAF Flying Fortresses to land at Lagens Airfield in the Portuguese owned Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
The islands were of enormous strategic value regarding the defeat of the German U-boats. Portugal, too weak to defend the Azores, tried to stay neutral in the war, with worries of a possible German invasion of the mainland through Spain.
In 1943 Britain requested, and Portugal agreed, to allow Britain to set up bases there.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in the midst of World War II - the arrival of the first RAF Flying Fortresses at Lagens Airfield in the Portuguese owned Azores Islands. Situated strategically in the vast Atlantic Ocean, these islands held immense importance in combating German U-boats. Portugal, although too weak to defend the Azores, aimed to maintain neutrality during this global conflict, fearing a potential invasion by Germany through Spain. However, recognizing their significance for victory against enemy submarines, Britain sought permission from Portugal to establish bases on these islands. On December 15th, 1943, this request was granted and marked a turning point in the war effort. The image showcases not only the impressive aircraft themselves but also symbolizes international cooperation and shared determination to overcome common adversaries. In this snapshot frozen in time from Memory Lane Prints collection, we witness history unfolding as brave members of Royal Air Force (RAF) navigate their planes onto Lagens Airfield's runway. These mighty bombers would go on to play a crucial role in safeguarding vital shipping routes and ultimately securing victory for Allied forces. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and collaboration during one of humanity's darkest hours. It stands as an enduring testament to those who fought tirelessly against tyranny and highlights how even seemingly remote locations can hold significant strategic value when united against a common foe.
