EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of triumph amidst the chaos of war. It depicts the B. P. Newton, a courageous Norwegian tanker that managed to escape from Gothenburg, Sweden to seek refuge in Britain during March 1941. Out of ten Norwegian ships attempting this perilous journey, she was the sole vessel to arrive safely at a British port, thanks to her remarkable speed that outpaced German armed service craft. The B. P. Newton belonged to the group of Kvarstad vessels - Norwegian ships held under arrest in Gothenburg after Germany invaded and occupied Norway. A symbol of defiance and resilience, this oil tanker carried not only precious cargo but also thirteen stowaways who sought freedom from oppression. Among them stood Miss Inger Johnson, a young Norwegian nurse whose bravery knew no bounds. As the ship docked at its destination in Britain, these thirteen stowaways could finally breathe freely again – their dash for freedom had been successful against all odds. The photograph showcases their relief and joy as they stand on deck, surrounded by fellow survivors who share their stories of struggle and hope. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness both the human spirit's indomitable willpower and the power of unity against adversity during World War II. It serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst darkness and despair, there is always room for courage and compassion to prevail over tyranny.
