EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we are transported back to the 1940s, a time when women played an integral role in supporting the war effort. The image captures a group of determined women at John I Thorneycroft & Co, Hampton Launch Works, proudly showcasing their completed masterpiece - a Whaleback boat. It was April 25th, 1943. These remarkable vessels held immense significance during World War II as they were built specifically for air-sea rescue operations by the RAF Marine Branch Air Sea Rescue. With an impressive top speed of 25-26 knots, these high-speed launches became crucial in saving Allied aircrew from treacherous waters. The photo not only highlights the craftsmanship and dedication of these skilled female workers but also sheds light on their contribution to the home front. As decorators meticulously put finishing touches on the boat's exterior, it is evident that every detail was executed with precision and care. This snapshot serves as a poignant reminder of how women stepped up during times of conflict and proved their capabilities beyond societal expectations. Their unwavering commitment to support military efforts showcases their resilience and determination. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints' collection, this powerful image immortalizes both the bravery of those who risked their lives at sea and the invaluable contributions made by women on land during World War II.
